  • Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology (Beilstein-Institut): Another fully open-access journal from the Beilstein-Institut, focusing on all aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology, which heavily intersects with chemistry.
  • Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry (Beilstein-Institut): A highly respected, peer-reviewed, fully open-access journal covering all areas of organic chemistry.
  • Chemical Science (Royal Society of Chemistry) - Hybrid, but often has open access content: The flagship journal of the RSC, also hybrid. Many high-impact articles are available open access, and it's a top-tier journal.
  • ChemistryOpen (Wiley-VCH): A fully open-access journal publishing high-quality original research in all areas of chemistry and related fields. It's part of the ChemPubSoc Europe family.
  • Green Chemistry (Royal Society of Chemistry) - Hybrid, but key content often free/open-access through author choice or institutional agreements: While primarily a hybrid journal, a significant amount of its content becomes open access due to author choices or institutional agreements. It's a leading journal in sustainable chemistry.
  • Journal of Chemical Education Journal of Chemical Education advances chemistry teaching and learning, and chemistry education research addressing laboratory experiments, curricula, and pedagogies.
  • MDPI Journals (e.g., Molecules, Catalysts, Inorganics): MDPI is a large open-access publisher with many specialized journals in various subfields of chemistry (e.g., Molecules for molecular chemistry, Catalysts for catalysis, Inorganics for inorganic chemistry). They are fully open access.
  • Nature Communications (Chemistry Section): While Nature portfolio journals are typically subscription-based, Nature Communications is fully open access across all scientific fields, including chemistry. It publishes high-quality research from all areas of the natural sciences, including significant chemistry papers.
  • Open Access in Chemistry (Germany)

There has been an increase in open access activities in chemistry in recent years (30 April 2025). For example, large specialist publishers have converted several journals to open access, and chemical societies have intensified their activities towards open access.

  • PLOS ONE (Chemistry Section): While broad in scope, PLOS ONE is a fully open-access journal that publishes a large volume of peer-reviewed research across all scientific and medical disciplines, including a dedicated section for chemistry.

  • RSC Advances (Royal Society of Chemistry): Published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, this is a broad scope, fully open-access journal covering multidisciplinary topics in the chemical sciences. It's a very active journal.

  • Scientific Reports (Chemistry Section): Another open-access journal from the Nature Portfolio, covering a wide range of scientific disciplines, with a substantial portion dedicated to chemistry research.
